Alongside a lineup of incredible guests at next month’s Thought Bubble Comic Art Festival comic convention in Harrogate next month, working with various partners, the team behind the massive event have included a great range of workshops for comic creators.
Thought Bubble is the Yorkshire Comic Art Festival, offering week long celebration of comics, illustration and more spread across the whole of Yorkshire starting 11th November, finishing in a huge two day comic convention in Harrogate over 16th to 17th November, at Harrogate Convention Centre.
Assembling a massive lineup of one hundred-plus comic creators and 450-plus exhibitors every year, the organisers of the not for profit event (which supports their chosen charity, being Barnardo’s, use the festival week to promote the power of comics, aiming inspire, educate and bring people together like no other medium. So, whether you’re a long-time fan of comic art or have never picked up a graphic novel before, you’ll find something for you.

This year’s workshop schedule opens with a Poetry Comics Workshop, hosted by poet and comic book writer Chrissy Williams, ideal for all ages from seven plus; and includes All About Printing with PRINT.WORK and their technical team, offering an informative, jargon free, overview and Q&A covering everything you need to know about printing; a discussion on Comics Art Funding with the Comics Cultural Impact Collective (Hannah Berry, Karrie Fransman, Rhiannon Griffiths, Sara Kenney, Myfanwy Tristram and Zara Slattery) along with Pete Stones, Relationship Manager for Literature at Arts Council England, to discuss how individuals and organisations in the UK might better access cultural funding; and a Crowdfunding Indie Comics workshop with Adriano Ariganello, Crowdfunder and Kickstarter Backer Favourite – an overview of how to plan your campaign, hit your goals, find your audience, and roll your crowdfunding success into future projects.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
