More Information on GoFundMe's Removal of Tornado Cash Legal Crowdfunding Campaign

Popular crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has removed a legal aid fundraiser for Tornado Cash co-founder and developer, citing a violation of its rules. Investor Ryan Adams alerted the digital asset community to the campaign’s shutdown and the cancellation of funds sent to Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm. GoFundMe shut down the campaign on February 14 due to an alleged breach of its rules and returned funds to donors. The platform cited Term 22, which allows it to restrict objectionable activity and protect itself from liability. Crypto users criticized the decision and highlighted the dangers of centralization. The United States Department of Justice has filed charges against Storm, accusing him of facilitating money laundering. Pertsev was previously arrested on money laundering charges in the Netherlands. Storm and Pertsev sought to raise $1.5 million for their legal defense but have now turned to the JuiceBox crowdfunding platform. In 2022, Canadian protesters also turned to Bitcoin after GoFundMe took down their campaign challenging Covid-19 restrictions. GoFundMe has announced that it will return $9 million to donors who contributed to the Freedom Convoy Campaign.
