Learn how to help a Kindred man recovering from a head injury and other ways to Lend A Hand Up

New fundraisers:

Shawn Johnson, Kindred, North Dakota, was involved in a serious accident at work Sept 6th when a piece of equipment struck him in the head, causing a severe laceration across his forehead, a skull fracture, and other injuries. He spent 9 days in the hospital and is now at home focused on managing pain. His wife, Jackie, took a leave of absence to prioritize Shawn’s recovery, so

Piper and Greg Mitchell Family, Fargo, welcomed their son, Harvey, into their family in 2023. Harvey was born with a pre-diagnosed condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Harvey bravely endured three open-heart surgeries and is now thriving. Piper and Greg were told it would be very unlikely to have another child with the same condition. In May, they were thrilled to learn they were expecting another boy. In July, Greg and Piper were informed that their baby, Alden, was also diagnosed with HLHS. As before,

Piper will need to relocate to the Twin Cities

where she and Aiden will be closely monitored and Aiden will receive open-heart surgery shortly after birth.

Randy Smith, Fargo
A benefit for Randy Smith of Fargo will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Town Hall Bar, 103 Main Ave., West Fargo. Proceeds from the pulled pork meal, bake sale, and auction will help Randy with medical costs associated with his battle against thyroid cancer. What began as a visit to the emergency room in early August quickly escalated into something far more serious, leading to a surgery and an extended two-week stay in the ICU as doctors worked tirelessly to remove a mass from his neck. Since then, he has been unable to return to work. He is preparing for upcoming aggressive radiation and chemotherapy which will intensify his financial challenges.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
