FARMINGTON — The Farmington Downtown Development Authority is hoping to transform Masons Corner, a small park at Grand River Avenue and Farmington Road, one of the city’s historical intersections.
With a crowdfunding campaign, the DDA is looking to raise $75,000 by June 7 to renovate the park located right next to the Masons Lodge where Blue Hat Coffee now operates.
The new Masons Corner would include fire pits, trees, green space and a swing. The new space would be universally accessible, as well.
“We launch this project in celebration of our bicentennial year, a gathering place that manifests, ‘Welcoming since 1824,'” said Kate Knight, DDA director, in a release. “Incorporating inclusivity-first best design practices ensures that our Masons Corner, at the historic main intersection of downtown Farmington, is ready to welcome all people for the next 200 years.”
The project is also eligible for a $75,000 match from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The city built Dinan Park, along Farmington Road, last year using the same crowdfunding method.

Officials noted Masons Corner’s place at the center of the city’s history. The Masons Lodge was built in 1876 and served as Farmington’s first city hall. During the city’s bicentennial year, officials feel the space is ideal for a renovation.
“This project is a great example of bringing historic and modern elements together for the benefit of a community,” said Dan Gilmartin, CEO of the Michigan Municipal League, in a release. “A historic area will now also include modern amenities and a universally accessible design to ensure that everyone can enjoy the space and have the opportunity to foster connections with those around them.”
People can donate to the project by visiting its Patronicity page. As of April 10, it had raised $2,275.
