The City of Cheboygan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation recently launched a crowdfunding campaign that aims to bring a new pocket park to downtown.
According to the Tuesday, July 15 announcement, if the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $10,000 by Sept. 15, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places program. The campaign is being offered through the Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity.

“This pocket park in Cheboygan will create a space for gathering, celebration and recognition of the history of the city and its people,” said MEDC Regional Prosperity Managing Director Paula Holtz in a press release. “We are pleased to support and provide resources for this effort through our Public Spaces Community Places program.”
The Majestic Riverview Park property was donated to the city in June 2021 and its development has been listed among the Parks and Recreation Commission’s goals for several years.

The campaign states that “Cheboygan’s new pocket park will transform underutilized land for the benefit of the community and provide a welcoming entrance to our city. A little oasis with access for all, the park will include new landscaping, seating and a beautiful river view accented by history and art.”
Through the project, an existing mural in the park will also be enhanced with four interpretive signs highlighting Indigenous culture, the Majestic family history, the Patterson Pavilion and native fish species.

“The Public Spaces Community Places grant will provide the needed funding to turn an underutilized piece of property into a restful pocket park of which the community can be proud,” said Connie Rieger, Majestic River Park development volunteer, in a statement. “Majestic Riverview Park will not only enhance the entrance to Cheboygan’s downtown, but it will also create a welcoming site for river activity viewing.”
