Welder is another folding keyboard with a 12.8 inch display, but this one has mechanical keys (crowdfunding)

The Welder keyboard is a mechanical keyboard with RGB backlit keys and a special feature – a built-in 12.8 inch touchscreen display that makes this input device look more like a widescreen laptop than a standard keyboard.

Expected to have a retail price of $699, the Welder keyboard seems pretty expensive, but the company behind the keyboard is running a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign with reward levels starting as low as $339 for folks willing to put up some money now and wait until December or later for the gadget to arrive.

Interestingly, this is the second crowdfunding campaign I’ve seen recently to feature a keyboard + 12.8 inch display. Last month I wrote about the KeyGo, which appears to use the same (or a very similar) display panel, but which has a low-profile laptop-style keyboard and a lower price tag ($538 retail or $259 during crowdfunding).

Feature-wise, the two devices seem to be pretty much identical. Both have 12.8 inch, 1920 x 720 pixel, 60 Hz displays with support for 10-finger touch input, 180 degree hinges, and RGB backlit keys.

The main difference is that the Welder keyboard has a mechanical keyboard with “Satellite-style Sakura switches” and removable, swappable keycaps. The keyboard has an aluminum body and a few other features including a knob for adjusting lighting, and a USB Type-A OTG port as well as two USB Type-C ports.

The 84-key keyboard measures 325 x 144 x 44mm 12.8″ x 5.7″ x 1.7″ and weighs 1.5 kg (3.3 pounds.
